Nosebleed first aid

How to pinch a nosebleed, and when bleeding needs emergency care.

Sit up and lean forward so blood does not run down the throat. Pinch the soft part of the nose, just below the bony bridge, continuously for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not stop to check. A cold cloth on the forehead does not replace the pinch.

Spit blood out rather than swallowing it. After the bleeding stops, avoid blowing the nose hard for the rest of the day.

Go to emergency care if bleeding is heavy, returns after proper pressure, follows a serious injury, or if the person feels faint, breathless, or is swallowing a large amount of blood.
