Safe listening

Everyday ways to reduce noise injury to hearing at work, weddings and on headphones.

Loud sound injures the inner ear. The risk rises with both volume and time. Headphones that make it hard to hear someone beside you are too loud. Take breaks, and turn the volume down rather than up to drown out a bus or a workshop.

At work, use the hearing protection the workplace provides, and have hearing checked if you notice ringing after a shift. Musicians, drivers, factory workers and people who use loud machinery are the usual groups who benefit from this.

Ringing that settles after a loud evening is a warning, not a harmless badge. Repeated exposure can become permanent hearing loss. A hearing test is reasonable if you already struggle in noise.
