Endoscopic sinus surgery
Functional endoscopic sinus surgery opens blocked sinus drainage pathways. It is considered for chronic sinusitis that has not improved with appropriate medical treatment, or for selected polyps and complications.
Most acute sinus symptoms after a cold are not an indication for surgery. Antibiotics are not automatic for every sinus flare either.
Risks include bleeding, and uncommonly injury to the eye or the base of the skull. Those risks are why the operation is reserved for people who need it, after scans and medical treatment have been discussed.
