Grommets (ventilation tubes)

A grommet is a tiny tube placed in the eardrum to ventilate the middle ear. It is considered for glue ear that affects hearing or for selected ear infections, more often in children.
Many children with a short episode of glue ear improve without an operation. A tube is one option after hearing has been measured and the family has discussed waiting.
The tube usually comes out on its own. Water precautions and follow-up are explained if a tube is advised. This is not a promise that every child with an earache needs one.
